Reduced counts in U.S. cases and deaths are the result of states and territories not reporting the information for some or all of the weekend. Those states and territories are: Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Mariana Islands, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Typically, these states" Monday updates include the weekend totals.

Colorado shows gaps in reporting on January 17, 2023 and January 19, 2023. We are investigating whether these gaps were one-off interruptions or changes to reporting cadence.

Illinois" stated update frequency for the state dashboard is “Data is updated on weekdays, Monday-Friday, either daily or weekly. Data is not updated on weekends or holidays.” The reporting since the New Year has not adhered to this reporting schedule, with a gap in reporting from January 5, 2023 - January 17, 2023. As of January 24, 2023, there have been no updates since January18, 2023.

Maine reported 51 deaths from January 10 - January 14, 2023, but only one death from January 17 - January 21, 2023. The reason for the decrease is unclear, but our data collection matches the headline numbers published by the Maine Department of Health.

On January 11, 2023, North Carolina reported a higher-than-usual count of deaths. We expect that this is due to the monthly release of deaths identified via death certificate review (see: )

Virginia's reported deaths in the past two weeks are substantially higher than recent trends. We have been unable to use publicly available information to confirm that this surge is due to death certificate review or backlogged deaths.

On January 11, 2023, we were able to back-distribute case data for Indiana for the period from December 14 to the present. A gap in reporting for that period was a result of changes to the source's dashboard. We have also adjusted our sourcing to pull from their new dashboard.

Vermont has not reported any COVID-19 deaths since December 21, 2022. On January 11, 2023, we observed an increase in deaths in Vermont equal to 11% of their cumulative deaths to date (from 791 to 881). These are older deaths identified via a “Health Department review of COVID-19 data”. We do not anticipate that we will back distribute these deaths.State press release: GitHub announcement:

The CRC stopped reporting asymptomatic cases in China's daily reports on Dec. 14. But the total number of asymptomatic cases that China has reported – 1,521,800 – will remain part of the nation’s cumulative total number of cases.

On December 7, 2022, Georgia did not update, but then updated on December 8, 2022. The state normally updates once per week on Wednesdays.
